When picking a domain name for your business, keep in mind, more names are better. Do not go crazy, at first, but do not restrict yourself either.
For example, if your business name is not indicative of your business activity, get two domain names, one with your business name and one with your business activity.
For example, if your business name is called Happy Feet and your business activity is selling shoes in New York, get both domain names HappyFeet.com and NewYorkShoes.com. Well, of course, those names are already taken, but you get the idea.
Your domain name has one purpose, to get people to your website.
So, here are the criteria in order of importance for a domain name.
- A name that people type in. NewYorkShoes.com is good. People looking for shoes in New York might type your domain name in.
- A name that is easy for people to remember and spell. HappyFeet.com and NewYorkShoes are both great.
- A name with keywords that search engines like. NewYorkShoes is great. Search engines rank you much higher if search terms are in your domain name.
- Dot com is best. Dot com is best, because people will guess your name ends in dot com. Dot com names also sell for at least ten times the price of other names.
- Dot biz, info, net and org, and if you are in the United States, dot us. If you cannot get a dot com name, the other names are fine as long as the meet the criteria above. So, try HappyFeet.biz and NewYorkShoes.info.
- Country codes are great for single word domain names. If you can, pick up your single word domain name in any available country code, like Shoes.me. Contact us at Domain Names.gs for help with getting country code domain names.
- Shorter is better. All other things being equal, shorter is better, because it is less to type. So, go ahead and pick up NYShoes.info along with NewYorkShoes.info.
